The Airport, which replaced the old HAL Bangalore International Airport, is located in Devanahalli, about 40 kilometers from Bangalore. It covers an area of 4,000 hectares. Bangalore International Airport Limited designed, built, owns, and operates India's first private sector greenfield airport.

Kempegowda International Airport, originally known as Bangalore International Airport, is located in Devanahalli, an affluent northern suburb of Bangalore. The Airport covers 4,000 acres and is owned and operated by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL). The name is named after "Kempe Gowda," the founder of Bangalore.

HAL Airport was the city's only major commercial Airport in the early days. Kempegowda International Airport was first opened in May 2008 to ease the blockage caused at HAL Airport. It is one of the first all-solar airports in Karnataka developed by CleanMAx Solar.

Cargo handled is down 12.7%, with approximately 326,372 tonnes (359,764 short tons) of cargo handled between April 2020 and March 2021. The customer-centric approach and several spectacular amenities set Kempegowda International Airport apart from other airports.

Kempegowda International Airport is connected to the city via NH 44, a six-lane flyover between Hebbal and the Airport to reduce travel time to and from the city. There are two other alternative routes through Thanisandra and Hennur to further improve connectivity.

BIAL works with several other government companies to provide seamless and transparent transportation options that are open to the public. Vajra Vayu – An air-conditioned bus service operated by BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation). 46 Volvo buses serve the Airport, ensuring a frequency of at least once every 30 minutes.
